The film is set in 2004 in
and around Baghdad (though actually made in Jordan) and has
only three main characters: the young GI, Specialist Owen
Eldridge (Brian Geraghty), the experienced African-American
Sergeant JT Sanborn (Anthony Mackie) and their new bomb
disposal expert, Staff Sergeant William James (Jeremy
Renner), who, like Sanborn, has seen service in Afghanistan.
James has come in to replace a recently deceased fellow
expert, whose luck ran out.
